EV-charging cost analysis for homes with heavy cooling loads
Level 2 charging can be one of a home’s largest flexible electrical loads. In Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, it can run while air conditioning and other equipment are already using substantial power. The cost question is therefore not only how much energy the vehicle needs, but also when and how that charging overlaps with the rest of the home.
Four parts of the charging-cost question
Charging timing
The start and end times determine which household and rate periods the charging session overlaps. Moving a session changes timing, not the vehicle’s underlying need for energy.
Charging current
Where supported, current affects the charger’s power draw and how long charging takes. A lower setting is not automatically practical or compatible for every vehicle, charger, trip schedule, or household.
Total charging energy
Kilowatt-hours reflect the energy delivered over time. Changing the schedule or current does not by itself eliminate the energy needed for the household’s driving.
Demand overlap
When charging coincides with cooling or another large load, the combined average power in a 15-minute interval can be higher than when those loads occur separately.
Cooling cannot be treated as a simple load to avoid
Southern Nevada cooling needs can be persistent, especially during hot weather and after the sun goes down. Advising people to keep the air conditioner off while charging ignores comfort, health, building heat, and the practical limits of manual coordination. Other household needs can be inflexible too.
Analysis can instead identify when overlap occurred in customer-provided data and model a limited set of charging-time or charging-current scenarios. That provides a way to compare tradeoffs without presenting a universal operating instruction. Any real change remains the customer’s decision and must fit the vehicle, charging equipment, household needs, and applicable manufacturer or utility requirements.
What determines whether a scenario is feasible
A modeled alternative is useful only when its assumptions are realistic. Feasibility can depend on:
- The vehicle’s charging capabilities and energy needed before the next trip
- The charger or outlet, its supported settings, and any compatible integrations
- Whether the household can change a start time or charging current
- Cooling, medical, work, travel, caregiving, and other household requirements
- Other loads that may run automatically or on a fixed schedule
- The quality and time coverage of the available utility and charging data
Energy Director would limit comparisons to supported data and equipment circumstances. It does not evaluate electrical capacity or safety and does not advise on equipment installation or electrical modifications. Those topics are outside the planned service scope.
Analysis, not promised automation
The planned service is a manually supervised utility-cost analysis. It can compare observed charging patterns with selected modeled alternatives and explain how timing, current, energy, and overlap influenced the estimates. It does not provide live automation, command a vehicle or charger, or promise compatibility with a charging platform or household device.
Modeled outcomes do not guarantee savings. Actual costs can differ because usage changes, data can be incomplete, utility information can change, and the modeled comparison does not reproduce every component of an NV Energy bill.
Solar and battery interaction at a high level
Solar can change the amount of charging energy imported from the grid when production and charging overlap. A battery can also change grid-import patterns under a selected operating scenario. Neither has one universal cost effect: the result depends on production, imports, exports, battery behavior, household load, rate treatment, and the available data.
Energy Director may model supported solar or battery-cost scenarios, but it does not control those systems or predict equipment performance.
